WHAT’S COMING UP

Unit 1

STUDY OF INFORMATIONAL TEXT

Students will kick off the year studying informational texts.

Our essential questions for this unit include:

- How do I determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text?

- How do I analyze the interactions between individuals and ideas in informational text?

- How is our identity shaped by how others perceive us?

Unit 2 -

STUDY OF LITERARY TEXT

Our essential questions for this unit include:

- What is theme?

- What is a fable?

- How do I determine a theme or central idea of a literary text and analyze its development over the course of the text?

- How does a story’s setting/theme drive the plot?

- How do I use a story’s theme to write a summary?

- How does money affect our moral decision-making?

- How does the setting of a story affect the plot?

- How do I review my vocabulary words to ensure understanding? (Year round)

- How does the setting of a play affect the plot?

- How do I use text evidence to further support my claim?

- How do I compare and contrast two different views of a teleplay?

Unit 3 -

CRAFT & STRUCTURE

Essential questions for this unit include:
-  How do I determine the connotative, denotative, and/or technical meanings of words/phrases?
- How do I determine the author’s point of view?
- How do I compare and contrast two versions of the same piece of literature?
- How do I use craft and structure to write for a specific purpose?
- How does an author distinguish his/her position from that of other viewpoints?
- How do video games influence behavior?

Unit 4 -

POETRY AND PROFESSIONAL LANGUAGE

Essential questions for this unit include:
- How does figurative language contribute to the author’s purpose?
- How do I analyze a poem?
- How do I dissect state testing language?
- How do I write a personal business letter?
- What are the elements of propaganda and how are they used in advertising?
- How do I use elements of propaganda to advertise my product?
- Where do I see elements of propaganda in advertising?

Unit 5

POST PSSA'S

Essential questions in this unit include:
- How do I determine the theme of a myth and cite evidence to prove it?
- How do I use the theme to provide an objective summary of a literary text?
- How do I create a presentation for the class?
- How do I compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character and the historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history?
